Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens (2000)

This week I read Oliver Twist.

He was a strange boy. He was about Oliver's age, but he behaved like a man.(p.13)
             Oliver escaped from new family because they treated him badly and violently. Then he walked so long and he was starving. When he sit down on a street, this strange boy helped him. I think this meering changed him life and I was happy to read this scene.


'Oh, you really expect him to come back, do you?' said Mr Grimwing. 'That boy has new clothes, good books under him arm and a five pound note in his pocket. He will join his old friends, the thieves, and laugh at you. If he retuns to his house, I will eat my head!(p.26)
           Oliver bigan to live a rich man and he lead a great life. But one day, the man sent him to retun a book to bookshop. Man's friend didn't trust him because he was a thief before. Oliver was thinking that he do this work honestly buy he was caught by thiefs and he couldn't back to the man's house. I was sorry to him. He is a honest boy but his new friends disturbed him so he couldn't live happily.


'I looked for the girl after his death,' he said, 'but she had disappeared. I never saw her again. Her name was Agnes. Later her child was born in workhorse. That child had the same father as you. He is your half-brother － Oliver Twist...'(p.56)
         I think this scene is important in this book. In this story, almost everyone doesn't know who Oliver is except few people. But from this scene, the mystery is bigin to solve. A picture on the wall is the key. I didn't think about this picture is important so when I read this scene, I was surprised.

Biginning this story, Oliver was so poor but end of this story he bigan to happy. I like this story and recommend this book to you!

Ireland by Tim Vicary

    This week I read "Ireland."  As the title this book is written about Ireland' s history, culture and so on.    This book consists of 12 chapters.  I think this book mainly tells about Ireland's history. Chapter1and 2 are about nature of Ireland. "Ireland is an island like a plate"(p.2)    I think this is a good example. I thought that's like a shape of Kumamoto. Kumamoto is also surrounded by mountains so I could imagine easily.   Chapter3 tells about Celtic people. "The  Celts are . . . tall and strong."(p.5)    When I was a junior high school student, my English teacher was a Irish man. Now the reason why he is tall is that he got Celtic people's gene. I think. Fron chapter 4 to chapter8 are about Ireland's history. "You can see the Red Hand on the flags of Northern Ireland."(p.11)    There is a story of Ulster's flag. A man cut off his hand to get a place in Ulster so there is a red hand on Ulster's flag.    Cha

Lost at Sea

They are cold and wet. They are very tired. They cannot call for help.(p.15)    Tyler, Daniela, and their friends take their boat out for the day to swim near an island. Faye's mother calls that a storm is coming but they can't go back. They reached an island and make shelter and fire. Next day, they write SOS with the stones and they can go back to each home. The Moneymaker by Janet Gleason (1999)

   I read “The moneymaker.” As written, this story is about money.    John Law was gambler, murderer and adventure. He tried to spread an idea of paper money in Paris.   Before the paper money invented, people used  gold and silver as way to buy things in Europe. But there were not many gold and silver so countries had to pay back a lot of debt. Law thought that the paper money system is the only way to solute the problem. He had many good feiends but also had many enemies. Good friends helped him to spead his idea, enemies tried to disturb him. He overcame many difficulties and he was very lucky man. He lost all his money once, but he always won gambling and got a huge amount of money. However, when he was dead, the paper money system was still doubtful.    Paper money system is normal to us now, I can't imagine the world that we don't use paper money.    This book was difficult for me because level is 5 and the story is very long so it took long time to finished reading.
