The Hound of the Baskervilles by Conan Doyle (1976)
The most interesting book that I read this semester is "The Hound of the Baskervilles" writtern by Conan Doyle. This book said that the most famous Sherlock Holmes story of all. I think you know about him because he is very popular author. I tried to read his book in Japanese before, but it was very difficult to understand and I gave up so I tried to read his another book again. As I thought, it was hard to read for me but also it was very good.
First of all I will talk about author of the book.
Conan Doyle is most famous as the inventor of Sherlock Holmes, but he had varied career as a writer, journalist and public figure. Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Scotland. He trained as a doctor when he was a child and worked as a surgeon on a whaling boat and also as a medical officer. In the middle of 1880s, he married and began studying psychic phenomenon and started spending more time writing. Sherlock Holmes debuted in 1887 in “A study in Scarlet.”
From 1891, he began to write short stories and it began to famous in the world, but actually, he wanted to write a historical story so in 1893, he killed Sherlock Holmes in “The Final Problem.” But after that, he wrote stories about Sherlock Holmes again.
This is kind of mystery. One night, a man's body found and his cause of death seemed hart attack, but there were foot prints of a very big dog, so Sherlock Holmes thought that this is not accident and Holmes and Dr. Watson began to research...
Legend has it that a monster dog lives near the Baskerville's house and it kills people. So a man who died was a head of Baskervill family.Dr. Watson and neighbors actually heard its sound. It was deep and big sound so people who head this sound frightened and believe the story of the monster dog. But behind the incident, there was a complex relationship between Baskervilles family.
Criminal is a insect scholar and he is one of Baskervill family but everyone thinks he was dead a long time ago. He wanted all of family's assets and one day, he noticed that if his relatives were dead, he would get huge amounts of money. He bought a very big dog and hide in a forest. He coated the dog in phosphorus and set fire on it. In this way, terrible looking monster dog was made.
One night, Holmes and Dr. Watson were in the forest and they met a monster dog and it was bout to bite a man's throat. Holmes finally killed the dog. They found Criminal's black boot sunk in the bog. Criminal had been using it to train the monster dog to its hidden place. Watson suspected that criminal lost his footing and sunk in it so he never to be seen again .
This is a long story so there are many people in this book. I couldn't remember everyone's name.
The words are difficult and I need a long time to read. But I think this book is good to read complex sentences. Also, story is very interesting. At first, many people thougt this incident was cause of monster dog because there were paw prints near the scene so I thought this must be an accident but the fact gradually became clear. I couldn't stop to read! I know that Conan Doil is a famous writer all over the world but I had never read his book so this was a good chance read his book. If you haven't read his book, why don't you read one.
